Q. Is there much difference in tequila taste between brands?
A. Tequilas vary in taste considerably. Some have a very strong agave flavor, some a solid body and mellow aroma, some with a peppery bite and long finish, and others that are smooth. You will have to sample many brands before you find the one(s) that suit you best.
Q. How should I drink tequila?
A. The traditional way is to use a tall, narrow shot glass called a caballito ('little horse', or pony). Sip it - no lime and salt, margarita mix, or ice. If you want to taste it, drink it neat at room temperature to appreciate the full bouquet and body.
Q. How should salt and lime be served with tequila?
A. The tequila shot with salt on one hand and a bite of lime is Hollywood stuff and few people drink it that way, mostly tourists. However, some people do put some lime juice in the tequila or bite the lime before sipping it.
Q. What, besides salt and lime, should be served with tequila?
A. Blanco and Reposado may be accompanied by "sangrita" made of tomato and orange juice with salt and chile.
Q. Is there anything I should be looking for on the label of a tequila?
A. Yes, you should look for a NOM number. It indicates compliance with government regulations and for actual agave content. Premium brands are 100%, regular brands are just over 50%.
